- A priori and a posteriori knowledge (Latin: “from before” and “from after”) Kant’s terms for knowledge that can be created through mental effort alone (a priori, before experience) and knowledge that stems from empirical data and inferences made from it (a posteriori, after experience). A priori knowledge includes mathematics, geometry, logic, and some areas of metaphysics; a posteriori knowledge includes empirical science, culture, etc.
- Antinomy A statement for which equally valid arguments can be made for and against its veracity.
- The sublime The experiece of wonder and fear caused by an overwhelming sight, such as the ocean, a storm, or a mountain range.
